While I prefer taking nature photos, I also get a thrill from taking photos of not-so-natural things that have beauty, bring history to life or evoke a certain feel. Even in the natural world, there are small details that can give us pause.

Big Boy

Big Boy No. 4014, a steam locomotive put into service by Union Pacific in 1941, toured the country in 2019 to mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad. On Nov. 22, it visited the Kansas town where I lived, arriving on a cool fall day. Overnight, it snowed, giving a “Polar Express” feel to its departure.

Something as simple as raindrops magnifying the veins of a leaf in fall can make us pause and take a closer look, if we only take the time to see what’s literally at our feet.
